MacFarlane took the Family Guy character Cleveland and his son Cleveland, Jr. but redesigned Junior. MacFarlane and Henry pitched a 22-minute pilot to Fox which aired on September 27, 2009 but had been leaked on the internet in June 2009. Even before the pilot episode premiered, the show had already been renewed for a 22-episode second season. After the first season of the show aired, it was given the green light to start production. Shortly after the second season ended in 2011, Fox renewed the series for a third season and a fourth season was announced later that year.The show's family centers around father Cleveland Brown, who was a featured character on Family Guy. His son Cleveland, Jr. was also on Family Guy (although for this show he was given a redesign to become older, softly-spoken and obese). Three new characters were added to fill out the Brown/Tubbs family.

Along the way he gets sidetracked in his hometown of Stoolbend, Virginia, where he runs into his old high school crush, Donna Tubbs. When old feelings arise he asks Donna to marry him and he settles down with his 14 year old Cleveland Junior and her two kids, 5 year old Rallo and 16 year old Roberta. His new life in Stoolbend revolves around his new family and old friends as well as his new friends and neighbors, Holt Richter, the rednecks Lester & Kendra Krinklesack and the family of bears, Tim & Arianna.
