When his girlfriend dumps him, it triggers an early mid-life crisis for the neurotic Manhattan writer. He addresses it by indulging in drugs and drink and finally by advertising on Craigslist as a private detective and trying to solve the mysteries in other people's lives - with varying degrees of success.
